Although it is situated in the Florida southeastern coast, Belle Glade in Palm Beach County is culturally more related with the Florida Heartland – the region located to the north and west of Lake Okeechobee. Belle Glade has a population of approximately 18,000 (2015 estimates) and is the largest city within the subtropical Everglades area.

After the devastating 1928 hurricane, the federal and state government started the construction of a levee, which eventually would become the Hoover Dike, a dike that now extends 85 miles around the lake.

The city’s motto, “her soil is her fortune” reflects the importance agriculture has had in the development of the area. Presently, the most important crops are sweet corn, lettuce, celery, and sugar cane. In fact, nearly half the nation’s production of sugar cane is grown in the meadows around Belle Glade.

The cost of living in Belle Glade is 16% lower than the national average. The homeownership rate is 44% and the median family income is $31,000. The home median sale price is $101,000 and the median apartment rent per month is $1,300.

Belle Glade’s most notable attraction is the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail, a bike path that runs atop the dike and makes part of the 1000-mile trail that connects Miami and Pensacola.
