Tarpon Springs Real Estate

Probably the most interesting fact about Tarpon Springs, in Pinellas County, Florida, is that more Greek Americans live here than in any other city in the United States. The city is famous for the fancy religious commemorations hosted by the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, the most popular of which is the January 6th Epiphany.

Tarpon Springs got its name from the fish that is found bountifully in nearby waters. It is also called the “sponge capital of the world”. In fact, sponge boats (like the traditional Greek diving boats used for sponge fishing) are a familiar view along the marina. Tarpon’s Greektown Historic District, particularly Dodecanese Avenue, is a flourishing traditional community and a popular tourist spot that has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The area has many traditional Greek cuisine restaurants and small shops.

The city’s population has reached approximately 24,500 (2015) and about 83% of the residents are homeowners. The median family income is about $46,500. The cost of living is almost 5% higher than the U.S. average. The home median sales price is $210,300 and the median apartment rent is $1,670 per month (2017).
