Belle Glade Real Estate

Although it is situated on Florida’s southeastern coast, Belle Glade in Palm Beach County is more culturally-related with the Florida Heartland – the region located to the north and west of Lake Okeechobee. Belle Glade has a population of approximately 18,000 (2015 estimates) and is the largest town within the subtropical Everglades area.

Controlling the Lake Okeechobee’s floodwaters has been critical to the development of the Belle Glade community. After the devastating 1928 hurricane, the federal and state government started the construction of a levee, which eventually would become the Hoover Dike, a dike that now extends 85 miles (137 kilometers) around the lake.

Besides flood control, sport fishing and farming have contributed greatly to the progress of Belle Glade. The city’s motto, “her soil is her fortune” reflects the importance agriculture has had in the development of the area. Presently, the most important crops are sweet corn, lettuce, celery, and sugar cane. In fact, nearly half the nation’s production of sugar cane is grown in the meadows around Belle Glade.

The cost of living in Belle Glade is 16% lower than the national average. The homeownership rate is 42% and the median family income is $28,700. The home median sale price is $68,600 and the median apartment rent per month is $1,380 (2017).

Belle Glade’s most notable attraction is the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail, a bike path that runs atop the dike and makes up part of the 1000-mile (1609 kilometers) trail that connects Miami and Pensacola.
