Tugboat Pushing Barge in Mississippi River New Orleans Near Crescent City Bridge

New Orleans, Louisiana, which is located along the Mississippi River, offers a great place to watch barges and tugboats, also known as towboats. A barge is a boat with a flat bottom, which is typically used to transport heavy cargo. It´s sometimes, but not always, self-propelled.  Tugboats are used to push or pull larger vessels, like barges, that have difficulty navigating through narrower areas or vessels that cannot move themselves. Although the railroad system significantly reduced the importance of the Mississippi River as a transportation route, visitors can still spend an afternoon walking along the river and watching these vessels navigate through the water.
